Nakba heisst auf Arabisch 'Katastrophe' und steht für die Vertreibung von 700 000 Palästinensern und der Zerstörung von über 300 palästinensischen Dörfern, ausgelöst durch die Gründung des Staates Israel. Der grosse Schlüssel steht als Symbol für die Flüchtlinge - Schlüssel der verlassenen (und teilweise zerstörten) Häuser werden von Generation zu Generation weitergegeben. -- A memorial event at the 60th anniversary of the Nakba on May 15 in the Aida refugee camp in Bethlehem. Nakba means 'catastrophy' and stands for the expulsion of 700,000 Palestinians and the destruction of more than 300 Palestinian villages, initiated by establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. The large key is a symbol for the refugees - the keys to the left (and partly destroyed) houses are handed over from generation to generation.
Mehr als 21 000 schwarze Ballone (einer für jeden Tag seit dem 15. Mai 1948) wurden gleichzeitig von Ramallah, Jerusalem, Bethlehem und anderen Orten in die Luft gelassen. -- More than 21,000 black balloons (one for each day since May 15, 1948) ascended to the sky in parallel from Ramallah, Jerusalem, Bethlehem and other places.
Viele tragen schwarze T-Shirts mit 1948, der Jahreszahl der Nakba. 194 ist aber auch die Nummer der UN-Resolution, die im Dezember 1948 verabschiedet wurde, in der es heisst 'den Flüchtlingen sollte erlaubt werden zum frühestmöglichen Zeitpunkt in ihre Heimat zurückzukehren'. -- Many wear black T-Shirts with 1948, the year of the Nakba. 194 is also the number of the UN Resolution from December 1948 stating that 'refugees wishing to return to their homes should be permitted to do so at the earliest practicable date'.
